About the Instructor

I am an O Dan #19442 (Fifth Degree). I began my Tang Soo Do training in June of 1972 under Mr. Charles J. Whitten, #12181.

Mr. Whitten was instructed by Mr. Jae Chul Shin #698 and Mr. Chun Sik Kim #2457 while he was stationed at Osan Air Force Base in Korea from December 1967 to December 1968. Mr. Whitten later began teaching Tang Soo Do at the Alton, Illinois YMCA in 1969.

I began training under him at the Boy's Club in Bethalto, Illinois in 1972. I tested under him for Cho Dan (First Degree) in the 55th classing on August 10, 1975. On May 30, 1977, I tested for E Dan (Second Degree) also under Mr. Whitten in the 62nd classing.

Shortly thereafter I became a member of the US Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federdation and started corresponding with Sa Bom Nim H.C. Hwang. Mr. Whitten chose to stay with Mr. Shins organization where he remains today. Through guidance and correspondence with Sa Bom Nim Hwang, I tested for Kyo Sa (certified instructor) on November 1, 1978 and Sam Dan (Third Degree) in the 66th classing on June 20, 1980. In approximately 1987, I started corresponding with Sa Bom Nim Russell Hanke. He then became my instructor of record and has been ever since. On November 22, 1992 I tested for Sa Dan (Fourth Degree) and Sa Bom (Master Instructor) in the 90th classing. June 9, 2001 I tested for O Dan (Fifth Degree) in the 107th classing.

I started teaching Tang Soo Do in October of 1975 in Greenfield, Illinois where I was also a school teacher of special education. Since that time I have had karate schools in Carrollton, Carlinville, Roodhouse, White Hall, Alton, and Jerseyville, Illinois. I currently have schools in Jerseyville and White Hall, Illinois.

The 2004 - 2005 school year was my last year teaching special education. I retired from the North Greene School District teaching special education. I am wanting to spend more time teaching martial arts to seniors, women, kids and of course, my regular classes. I also enjoy riding my bike.
